في السنوات الأخيرة عايش العالم أزمة اقتصادية لم يسبق لها مثيل،  فقد واجهت الشركات مصيراً مجهولاً على كثير من الأصعدة،  وأدى ذلك كله إلى اختفاء أو تقليص دور بعض المصارف العالمية والعلامات التجارية،  كما أن الكثير من شركات الصناعة قد وضعت نفسها في قائمة الشركات التي تواجه الإفلاس،  وكذلك انهارت أسواق العقار، وانخفض الانفاق الاستهلاكي، كما أدى إعادة هيكلة شركات الصناعة إلى معدلات متزايدة من البطا.
